Memory culture is becoming increasingly multi-perspective and inclusive, but also more controversial and confrontational. Actors in formerly colonised societies are finding new forms of commemoration in art, literature, science and the preservation of their cultural heritage.
Against this backdrop, the event, hosted by the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre (JHGC) and the Heinrich Boell Foundation (hbf) intends to provide a platform for mostly experts from Africa on memory studies and practices, to exchange ideas and experiences on commemorating colonialism and understanding its impact to this day and looking at ways of remembering it in the future.
